A New Czech National Anthem Could Be Emerging Soon (Nova Ceska Narodni Hymna?)

The national Czech anthem was composed over 170 years ago by Frantisek Skroup as the opening scene of a patriotic opera called Fidlovacka. The opera was written by Josef Kajetan Tyl at a time where Czechs were only a small ethnic minority within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The anthem is known to every Czech living at home or abroad as a festive patriotic piece. But to the Czech conductor and composer Varhan Orchestrovic Bauer it is envisioned as a melancholic and sad folk song that needs a makeover.

The unusually named Varhan Orchestrovic Bauer (varhany means “pipe organ” in Czech, while Orchestrovic is derived from the word “orchestra”) is a well-known conductor and composer whose work has featured in a number of cutting-edge films. His most ambitious work to date was composing the soundtrack for the film Goya’s Ghosts by Milos Forman and now the national Czech anthem.

“I loved it the way it was but I thought it was a good idea to incorporate more Czech music. After all, everyone knows the Czech Republic thanks to composers such as Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek or Martinu. And I felt I should incorporate their themes into the music of Frantisek Skroup. I wanted to admire them in front of everybody and to make the Czech anthem more Czech,” said V. O. Bauer. He also added that the composers named above are still creating the image of Czech people outside the Czech Republic and the new anthem would build a new valuable image of our country in the European Union.

The words: “Where is my home? Where is my home?” were changed to “Where is my home? Here is my home.” to state the importance of our independent state in the middle of Europe. Bauer believes that the new anthem is more glorious and more fitted to today’s era. He actually introduced two versions of this anthem: extravagant and poly-harmonic. His new arrangement premiered in August at a concert marking the 40th anniversary of the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Czechs will be able to hear his interpretation again in January 2009 in Brussels, where it is set to mark the start of the Czech presidency of the European Union. Will this mean that it will replace our old anthem forever? Some people love the new anthem interpretation but most of Czechs would like to keep it the way it is. Do you also feel our anthem needs a makeover?

Neobvykle pojmenovan Varhan Orchestrovic Bauer is velmi znamy dirigent a skladatel, ktery slozil hudbu k nekolika pronikavym filmum.

Bauer take dodal, ze vyse jmenovani skladatele stale zobrazuji podobu Cechu mimo ceskou republiku a nova hymna by vybudovala novou cennou podobu nasi zeme v Evropske Unii.

Slova: “Kde domov muj? Bauer predstavil dve verze teto hymny: extravagantni a polyharmonickou.

Cesi budou moci slyset tuto hymnu znovu v lednu 2009 v Bruselu, kde bude znit jako symbol zacatku predsednictvi Ceske republiky v Evropske Unii. Bude to znamenat ze nahradi navzdy nasi starou hymnu? Nekterym lidem se libi nova interpretace hymny ale vetsina Cechu by si chtela udrzet jeji puvodni verzi. Myslite si, ze nase hymna potrebuje predelavku?
