Respected journalist from the weekly Respekt will speak about the rate of dependency of central Europe on Russian gas and oil and what can be done about this dependency. He will also analyze how the term “energy security” is understood in Europe, the European Union and the US and how Russia is using its energy resources to expand its sphere of influence.

Jan Macháček is a journalist and musician currently working as a commentator for the daily newspaper Hospodarske noviny, to which he also occasionally contributes articles and interviews. He also serves as a board member of Transparency International in the Czech Republic. Previously, he lectured on Politics and the Economics of Transformation at the Anglo American college in Prague.

During communism in the 1980s, Macháček was involved in underground culture and samizdat publishing. He was a member of the famous underground music band The Plastic People of the Universe as a guitar player and later joined the band Garage, which he still plays with. In the 1980s, he signed Charter 77 and was involved in various opposition activities. He studied at the Prague School of Economics in the first half of the 1980s, but due to political reasons did not finish.

After the revolution in 1989, Macháček joined together people from underground publishing to create the first independent media outlet in the country, the weekly Respekt (originally titled Information Service). There, he was frequently awarded for both his investigative and analytical writing. In 2000 he effectively became Respekt’s deputy editor in chief. Additionally, Macháček has also been a fellow of the National Forum Foundation in Washington and the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan.

10/10/08 – 10/12/08 – Virginia: Richmond Folk Festival

Time: N/A

Southside Virginia Czech/Slovak Heritage Society Community Historians and Activists

Between 1895 and 1920, over 500 Slavic families came from either Western states or directly from Eastern Europe to settle in Virginia. The greatest number settled in the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George counties surrounding Petersburg, Virginia, mostly on farmlands that had been abandoned after the battles of the American Civil War that had raged in the area.

The Southside Virginia Czech/Slovak Heritage Society promotes their cultural heritage and sponsors events throughout Virginia. One of the primary missions of the SVCSHS is to document genealogical information of all area Czech/Slovaks in order to help families re-connect. Recent efforts have included building a “virtual library” of reference materials, sponsoring recipe collection projects, Christmas celebrations, Easter events, and farm and cemetery tours. Members of the Society are descendants of the Czech/Slovaks who settled in Virginia.

Mark Halata and Texavia

Texas-Czech polka

Polka is one of the musics Texans play best, and that shouldn’t come as a surprise given the strong Eastern and Central European heritage of many of the state’s residents. Whether it’s a Tex-Mex conjunto or a western swing band, polka is a mainstay in the repertoire. A young exponent of one of the more rare varieties of Texas polka music is Mark Halata with his group Texavia. Its Czech-Moravian style mixes traditional Czech tunes with roots country and rock to produce traditional polkas and waltzes with a rousing zest that brings them into a new century.

Polish, German, Slovak, Czech and Hungarian immigrants to eastern and central Texas during the late-19th century brought their native languages, music and dance traditions and instruments with them. Polkas, waltzes and obereks blended with older reels and quadrilles already popular with Texans. The introduction of the accordion opened up new possibilities and generated the creation of new hybrid musical forms.

Growing up in Pasadena, Texas, a “little Czech bubble,” bandleader Mark Halata began playing the accordion at age five. He took a handful of basic lessons, but really learned to play by following along with the Czech polkas his father listened to. “My dad didn’t play but he always had Czech music on, so that’s what I played.” Regular trips to visit relatives in the Czech community of Moravia, Texas further developed his love of Czech polka and the accordion.

10/18/08 – 10/26/08 London: Czech Films at London Film Festival

Time: Below

Location: London

Details: The UK premieres of documentary ‘Citizen Havel’, Petr Zelenka’s unusual take on theatre and life ‘The Karamazovs’ and Vladimir Michalek’s comedy ‘Of Parents and Children’ will be the highlights of Cinema Europea section at the 52nd year of the London Film Festival.

10/22/08 @ 8:30 PM, NFT2 – Citizen Havel (Obcan Havel)

10/26/08 @ 2:00 PM TRICYCLE – Citizen Havel (Obcan Havel)

Details: A witty, considered and personal documentary with fascinating insights into the life of Václav Havel, the man who helped shape the early history of the Czech Republic. After the split of Czechoslovakia in 1992 former political dissident, playwright and outspoken essayist Václav Havel became the first president of a new country, the Czech Republic. A former enemy of the state and leader of the Velvet Revolution, Havel was given a popular mandate to transform that state and its institutions. On taking his new office, Havel invited his friend the documentarist Pavel Koutecký to capture the birth of their new nation. Filmed over ten years, this understated, witty and considered documentary gives a fascinating insight into Czech politics and the man who helped shape the history of the new republic.

Covering a vast range of events from intense international debates, celebrity visits (including those of The Rolling Stones and Bill Clinton) and the routine of day-to-day politics, to unexpected personal tragedy, this is an intimate portrait of a politician and of a man. Koutecký died in 2006 and his friend filmmaker Miroslav Janek spent several years piecing together this engaging multi-layered portrait, which remains both a testimony to a charismatic leader and to an esteemed filmmaker.

10/18/08 @ 6:35 PM, Curzor Mayfair – The Karamazovs (Karamazovi)

10/21/08 @ 1:30 PM, Odeon West End 1 – The Karamazovs (Karamazovi)

Details: Petr Zelenka’s unusual take on theatre and life follows a group of Czech actors as they perform an adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s novel in a Polish factory. A Prague theatre company arrives in Krakow to present a stage adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov at an alternative drama festival to be presented in a local steelworks. As rehearsals progress, we follow developments among the actors themselves as well as their interaction with a single worker who, as a surrogate audience, is drawn inevitably into the whole process. Dostoyevsky’s themes of faith, immortality, and salvation cross borders as the film moves between its alternating perspectives.

Focussing on the trial scenes, the film examines the subject of patricide and the complicity of the three younger Karamazovs and the supposedly illegitimate Smerdyakov. Already hailed as the most notable Czech film of the year, Zelenka’s film is typically ambitious, charting new possibilities with its use of former ‘new wave’ director Evald Schorm’s now classic dramatisation. Described by Zelenka as a homage to acting, the film features Ivan Trojan, who worked with him on the stage and film versions of his last work, Wrong Side Up, as the older Karamazov.

10/23/08 @ 8:30 PM, NFT2 – Of Parents and Children (O Rodicich a Detech)

10/24/08 @ 1:30 PM, NFT2 – Of Parents and Children (O Rodicich a Detech)

Details: A retired scientist and his adult son reflect on life during their regular walk around the outskirts of Prague in Vladimír Michálek’s attractive comedy.
Adapted from the award-winning novel by Emil Hakl, Vladimír Michálek’s film tells of the relationship between a retired microbiologist (Josef Somr) and his 40-year-old son (David Novotný). Every week, the father gives a lecture at the zoo, and meets his son outside the penguin house for their weekly walk around the outskirts of Prague, passing through locations that evoke their own poetry and trigger a variety of reflections – on family life, childhood, women, and the absurdities of the modern world.

Focussing on this central situation, the film replays previous episodes in their lives, and develops a parallel story in which an illegitimate grown-up grandson (Luboš Kostelný) pays an unexpected call on his father’s current girlfriend (Mariana Kroftová). Superbly acted by Josef Somr (the station guard from Closely Observed Trains) as the father and Novotný, it is a beautifully observed film, with witty dialogue, full of comic irony and poetry, and ideally complemented by Martin Štrba’s sensitive cinematography.

For 2009 the Czech and Slovak communities are coming together again, but under a different name; the Bohemian Ball 2009 will be held in The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

With your support, on February 20th, 2009 the results of all the hard work will bear fruits and we all will truly enjoy the evening knowing that we helped to support a worthy cause, The SickKids Foundation. Purchase your tickets today!
